Standard Qi charging works. It just needs you to be more accurate than most people are while walking.
Wireless charging is induction: a coil in the charger creates a changing magnetic field, a coil in the phone turns that field back into current. It is a well-understood piece of engineering with one stubborn practical weakness — the two coils must line up.
The alignment problem
Coupling between two coils falls off fast with distance and offset. A few millimetres out and charging slows noticeably. A centimetre out and it may stop entirely, or worse, continue at a crawl while generating heat instead of charge.
On a charging pad sitting on a desk, you can nudge the phone until the light goes green. Attached to the back of a phone that is in your hand, in a pocket, or in a bag, nothing stays lined up. This is the entire reason magnetic power banks exist.
What the magnets change
A ring of magnets around the charging coil pulls the two coils into concentric alignment and holds them there. The practical consequences are larger than they sound:
- Consistent speed. Aligned coils couple efficiently, so 15W means 15W rather than "up to 15W if you got it right".
- Less heat. Misalignment dumps energy as heat instead of charge. Correct alignment is the single biggest thing you can do to keep a wireless charge cool.
- It survives movement. The bank stays put in a pocket, which is what makes charging while walking possible at all.
- No guessing. The snap is the confirmation. You do not need to check a screen.

When to skip wireless entirely
Wireless is the right answer for topping up during the day — grabbing 20 or 30% without stopping what you are doing. It is the wrong answer for going from nearly flat to full in a hurry. For that, use the Type-C port: wired charging is faster, cooler, and more efficient, and any decent magnetic bank offers both.
The useful way to think about it: the magnet buys you convenience, the cable buys you speed. A bank that does both means you never have to pick in advance.

Yes. Qi2 Android phones align natively. Older Qi phones work with an adhesive magnet ring or a magnet-equipped case, and every phone can charge by cable.
Will the magnets damage my phone or cards?
